Senator Billig has listened to his constituents, carried our community values to Olympia, and achieved numerous legislative successes for the Spokane community. Here are a few highlights:
- Led the Senate effort to pass the COVID-19 response bill, which invested $200 million in the state's COVID response.
- Identified housing/homelessness as a pressing problem for our state and, as Majority Leader, created a permanent standing committee, the Senate Housing Stability and Affordability Committee, which immediately produced results to address homelessness and improve housing stability.
- Prime sponsor of important public safety legislation including a bill on make oil trains safer and another to reduce property crimes.
- Key member of a bipartisan Eastern Washington delegation that brought the Washington State University Medical School to Spokane and expanded funding for the University of Washington medical school program in Spokane
- Prime-sponsored landmark legislation to protect the Spokane River
- Passed job-creating bills including important legislation on aviation biofuels
- Championed several significant campaign finance reform bills that have made elections in our state more transparent and fair
- Secured funding for the North Spokane Corridor, Central City Line, and University District Gateway Bridge
- Leader in the passage of the Early Start Act, an historic bill that will improve quality and increase access for early learning in our state
- Passed Neighborhood Safe Streets Bill to save cities money, reduce red tape, and make streets safer
- Prime-sponsored bill to provide opportunities for foster children siblings in different foster care homes to visit each other as often as possible
- Championed the Safe Routes to School program and secured funding for this effective program for our children
- Passed a bill to label and provide information to consumers of products containing asbestos, a hazardous mineral found in building material
- Passed legislation to limit the state from purchasing products that contain PCBs, a toxic chemical that pollutes our state waterways
- Prime sponsor of legislation that improved the delivery of services for infants and toddlers with disabilities
- Secured funding for numerous Spokane area capital investment projects including: The YWCA's Family Justice Center, The Woman's & Children Free Restaurant, Corbin Senior Center, Spokane Women's Club, Spokane Children's Theater, and the Peaceful Valley Community Center
- Helped pass tuition cuts for students at Washington State universities and community colleges
- Prime-sponsored legislation that created a greater focus on Native American education in our state
- Passed Sheena's Law, a key public safety bill, that reduces access to firearms for those suffering from a mental health crisis
